Top 10 WWF/E wrestlers of all time- 8th September 2003

Top 10 WWF/E wrestlers of all time

I guess the old line 'opinions given are just the feelings of this writer' may be necessary here. I've been into professional wrestling for over 15 years, so I feel that I can offer an experienced view. Having seen more people come and go, win world titles; and more crazy storylines than is imaginable - and still come back for more; the opportunity to give my 10 favourite wrestlers from the WWF/E is one that I couldn't pass up.

I will attempt to build suspense, by working from ten through to one.....

Number 10 - 'RAVISHING' RICK RUDE.

Rick was a great worker, a great talker; and an all round tough guy. More than capable of riling a crowd with his 'ladies man' routine, and "What I'd like to have right now...." is for all of you to go into your old WWF videos; and appreciate how well his work still holds up today. No longer with us, Rick passed away in recent years; and is sadly missed...

Number 9 - 'HITMAN' BRET HART.

Sadly, all people ever seem to think of when Bret's name is mentioned; is the now infamous and better forgotten 'Montreal Screwjob' in 1997. What SHOULD be remembered is the amount of great matches between 1990 and 1996 when Bret was at his peak. Very credible wrestler, wildly popular; and respected by all. There was only one facet of wrestling Bret couldn't do, and you'll find that out later in this list.

Number 8 - BOB BACKLUND.

Bob was world champion in the pre - sports entertainment era, before 1984; and was an amazing scientific worker. He made a bizarre comeback in the mid 1990's, and showed more personality than many considered possible. Definitely worthy of legendary status.
Number 7 - 'STONE COLD' STEVE AUSTIN.

There's only one, and he revolutionised wrestling in recent years. The 'Attitude' years were based around Steve, and whilst neck problems and injuries slowed him down from a scientific star in WCW into a brawler in WWF/E; he was still an exciting worker who is gold behind the microphone. Now kind of retired, but still adored by millions; Austin is the first name many think of when wrestling is mentioned - and for good and well deserved reason.

Number 6 - THE UNDERTAKER.

'Taker has been there and done it. He's wrestled everyone, and always seems to know when it's time to update his act; which is the sign of a true star. He's the one person who stayed with the promotion, even in the midst of the WWF/WCW battle when jumping sides was 'cool'; and is etched into wrestling history as probably the best 'big man' of recent times

Number 5 - 'HEARTBREAK KID' SHAWN MICHAELS.

Shawn started off as a tag team wrestler, and you could see the potential. As the 1990 rolled on he became the hottest 's , thing going. Far better as a heel, charisma and cockiness was mixed with a great workrate. Certainly responsible for some of wrestling's more controversial moments both on screen and backstage, but no-one could ever deny his talent.

Number 4 - 'THE KING OF HARTS' OWEN HART.

From that, to probably the most talented man never to hold the WWF/E world title. What was Bret Hart missing, you ask from earlier? He was missing Owen's ability to do highflying moves. Owen had it all, and was everything that was good about wrestling - one of the nicest people to ever lace a pair of boots; with more talent than most could dream of. Tragically lost, in a ridiculous accident that should never have been; and will forever be loved and remembered fondly.
Number 3 - 'NATURE BOY' RIC FLAIR.

Whooo! To be the man, you had to beat the 16 time world champion. Flair broke his back at the beginning of his career in 1975, and should never have wrestled again. Today, he is a living legend that even as a heel; is adored by many. Flair used to have 60 minute matches, could work a good match with almost anyone and even make a broomstick look like a credible opponent. The best world champion of our time.

Number 2 - MICK FOLEY.

Mr Hardcore himself, with more persona's than you could swing a chair at. Known as Cactus Jack, Mankind, Dude Love; and plain old Mick Foley. Mick would take bumps and do things that most people wouldnt even have the courage to think about. No one man has given and risked his physical wellbeing for the entertainment of fans, more than Foley. And yet, he's a best selling author; autobiographies - children's books - and fiction. Wrestling is a poorer place when he isn't on screen, and there will never be anyone like Mick again. A true class act, and someone who I owe a personal debt to for his kindness to my best friend.

Number 1 - KURT ANGLE.

He's your Olympic Hero, baby! Oh it's true, it's TRUE! In all seriousness, Angle was a great amateur style wrestler, winning Olympic gold in 1996. The talent was obviously there to move across to the professional style, but many (including myself) couldn't see him being given the chance and time to adapt. Turns out he didn't need it anyway! Angle is amazingly adept at both sides of the fence, a USA babyface hero - and yet a wonderfully and hilariously annoying heel. The best wrestler on the WWE's roster today by a country mile, there is NOTHING this man cannot do. A lock for any credible wrestling Hall of Fame.
