Everstrong interview

It seems that success doesn't have to follow a college education, and Everstrong have proved this.

Phil Carr (guitarist), Simon Vaughan (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano) and Paul Murphy (drummer) of the Manchester band Everstrong met whilst taking an Access to Music course at North Trafford College.

"We didn't finish the course," said Paul, "We formed the band and took other opportunities."

The band formed in late 2000, with bassist Luke Currie. "Luke left Everstrong about a year ago," said Paul, "he joined Parker, but we are all still good mates."

Everstrong put an advert for a bassist on the Internet. "Mike Thomas contacted us, and we were amazed at his capability," said Paul. "He fitted into the band straight away."

"Then we got the lead guitarist, Paul Williams, late 2002. He is very talented and we were very lucky to grab him."

What are your musical influences?

"We are all influenced by different kinds of music such as Beetles, Motown and Bowie," said Paul. "Our new guitarist, Paul [Williams] has introduced us to rock music, and this has added a different dimension to the band."

Everstrong are soon to release a CD containing tracks: Hello Again, Realise, Soliders and All the Time (acoustic version).

Tell us about the Everstrong gigs

"The first Everstrong gig was in January 2001, at the Roadhouse," said Paul. "Since then we played over 40 gigs in the year, to build up a fan base. The more gigs we played, the more people knew of us."

Everstrong have played out of Manchester, cities including London, Edinburgh, and Macclesfield. "We try and play out of Manchester at least three times a month, to build up fanbases further afield," said Paul.

"We played at Bar Cuba in Macclesfield in summer 2001 and then we played Edinburgh for the first time the night after," said Paul. "My favourite venues are in Edinburgh; the crowd just go mad for it!"

The next gigs are as scheduled:

Thursday 21st August 2003 @ Night & Day

Thursday 11th September @ Courtneys (Electricity Showcase)

And:

"Rick Wittler from Shed Seven will be DJing at 42nd Street, when we play on 15th November. This is the night before my birthday," said Paul, "so it will be a good night!"

"We are also in talks with the management of Glastonbury," said Paul. "They want to listen to some of our tunes, but things are already looking hopeful that we will be on the Glastonbury stage next year!"

Any indication of a signing?

"A couple of representatives from the music industry have been to our gigs," said Paul, "namely DB Records in London and Bootcut Music Label have expressed a big interest. Fingers crossed we will be signed soon."

And while you're on, check out Paul's hilarious web blogs in his diary: "I seem to get into mad situations after gigs, and Simon suggested that I start writing thing down," explained Paul. "There are loads of things that have happened that I need to add to it though."
