Frames Of Mind

Frame Of Mind interview

Ian Lawton, Dom Morgan, Dave Lee and Paulo Batiste, otherwise know as Frame of Mind, are gathering a lot of interest from the music industry.

"If we are as good as we like to think we are," said Ian, "we will have had several record deals by the end of next year."

Frame of Mind have received interest from people such as Perry Hughes (manager of Russell Watson) at Universal, and Bill Bailey (Head of Artist Development) who managed Cleopatra and dressed the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays.

Ian and Dom met at North Trafford College in September 2001 and started writing songs. Frame of Mind formed at this time with bassist Jon and drummer Joel, but it wasn't until Paolo and Dave replaced them in early 2002 that things really started for Frame of Mind.

"We all have made a lot of sacrifices," said Ian. "Don and myself gave up our collage courses and have gone full time with the band. The first gig we played with the current line up was at the Roadhouse in Manchester soon after Paolo and Lee joined us.

We have created a strong following and we have gigs booked at The Printworks in the city. However," continued Ian, "we don't like to play in the city. City venues are not good for bands that are starting out; they don't pay well unless you can get a lot of people down to see you. At the beginning it's hard enough without having to worry about money. It took us six months to sort out the sound and it's an expensive hobby."."

Before Frame of Mind formed, Ian and Dom were in other bands. Ian drummed for a band called Slide. "The difference with Frame of Mind," said Ian "is that we are all influenced by different music. I think this holds the attention of our audiences when we play live better than if we all liked the same type of music. But you will need to come and see us play to experience it!"

Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Matchbox 20, U2, Train, Stone Roses and Happy Mondays are just some of the bands that influence Frame of Mind.

"Our lyrics are based on experiences that people can relate to. It is a good feeling when you hear people singing your own songs. I got an email a few months ago from a girl who lived down south who had just split up with her boyfriend," said Ian. "She had heard On My Mind and emailed me to tell me that she liked it a lot. Things like that make all the work and effort that we have put into the band worthwhile."

"We write the songs together and we motivate each other," said Ian. "We know each other inside and out. Dom is the most naturally talented of the band and I know he won't like me saying this," he laughed, "but he is also the laziest."

Frame of Mind are a talented band waiting for the right record deal. "When we first started out we would have accepted any record deal," said Ian. "Now we have learnt a few things about the music industry. I'm not saying that we are cynical; we are just waiting for the deal that is right for us."
