Andrea interviews Dustfly - 7th August 2003

Dustfly's new EP, Water is out now is available.

Pete, Tony, Marcus and Doug answered questions about the band, gigs and some little things that make Dustfly.

Who writes the songs?

All of our songs are written by Dustfly as one.

Any one of us can have an idea which will be built upon by the rest of the band. We have our own studio where most ideas are put down before being developed further in the practice room.

Who is your manager?

We have managed ourselves so far but we are currently on the look out for suitable Management to represent us.

Were any of you in bands before Dustfly? If so which bands

Marcus our Bassist was in a band called the Exceedingly Good Cakes, Pete, our Guitarist and his brother Tony who is our drummer were in a band called Facectomy. Both bands were popular in local areas and gigged around the UK. Doug was in an imaginary band with a name that cannot be spoken and often slips back into some of the vocals when in public places.

How long have you been together?

We have been together in our current lineup for about 2 years

Where do you all live?

We all live in Blackburn and surrounding areas.

Which bands inspire your music?

Band Influences: Radiohead, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Bob Marley, Deus, Janes Addiction, Granddaddy, Muse, The Cure, Jeff Buckley, Moloko, Charlotte Church to name a few.

Which bands did you listen to when you were younger?

Marcus: ACDC, and Billy Joel and Madonna!

Pete: Janes Addiction, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Steve Hillage!

Tony: Phil Collins, Dire Straights, Marillion.

Doug: Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Pearl Harbour, Eric Dolphy and all sorts of Jazz.

Have your music tastes changed since you started the band?

Marcus: Mine has changed to encompass more styles of music, also I like listening to music that has thought behind it whereas in the past it was mindless party noise.

Pete: I wouldn't say my musical taste has changed due to the band apart from being introduced to other band's music we have gigged with but it has definitely widened over the years.

Doug: Yeah - the more you know of how stuff goes together, the more you can hear and appreciate.

What are you day jobs? What is the worst job you have ever had.

Marcus: (Web Designer) - the worst job I had was printing homework diaries for schools and working for 2 ex-headmasters with a power obsession.

Tony: Graphic Designer - Worst Job? Olive picking.

Pete: (Electrician for Bus building company). Worst job? Probably packing Oranges in Holland.

Doug: (Programmer) - Worst job? Um... Probably the six weeks I spent drowning stoats in mangrove swamps.

Where and when was your first gig as Dustfly?

The first gig as Dustfly was in the Malt and Hops in Blackburn, we managed to fill the pub up with friends and only got paid £30 even though they made a fortune behind the bar and promised us 10% of takings!

Which is your most memorable gig?

Surprisingly, Norfolk beer festival June 2003 was probably the most memorable frenzied, people were asking for our autographs! We spent the weekend camping by the sea and sampling the hazy delights of real ales! The gig was amazing; playing outside with the sun setting, the place was packed out and there was such a good atmosphere, we were all buzzing and played a blinding gig.

Have you any up and coming gigs in the near future? When and where?

We have applied to play Manchester's 'In the City' in September 2003, other than that we have been concentrating on writing new material and hope to be back gigging with a string of dates soon.

What do you want for the future? If you collectively had three wishes guaranteed to come true what would they be?

Marcus: Doug our vocalist's Ego needs banishing, would love to get signed and have a successful career in the music business finally, to be able to spend all my time writing and performing.

Tony: Want a new Cymbal for the future. Wish I hadn't been into Phil Collins, wish I hadn't been into Dire Straights and wish I hadn't been into Marillion.

Doug: Fair trade, better world, bigger <edit>.

Pete: May Marcus, Tony's & Doug's Wishes to come true.

Dustfly collectively wish to spend their days exploring their creativity rather than having to work at unfulfilling jobs, wish to spread love and enlightenment to the world through their music and to play the headline at Glastonbury Festival!

Describe the personalities of the band members - e.g. who is the peace keeper and who argues the most.

Marcus: Doug is the EGO, Pete is the showman, Tony is the worrier and perfectionist, Marcus is the paranoid schizophrenic.

The two brothers in the band, Tony the drummer and Pete the guitarist are always at each others throats! Doug the singer tries to be the peace keeper Marcus laughs at the whole thing from the sidelines.

Pete: Have to agree with most of the above however Marcus is usually crying from the sidelines.

Doug: I'm the peacekeeper whilst the rest of 'em spat like school-girls.

Describe your dress sense.

Marcus: Sometimes puke inducing; most of the time buys clothes from skate shops but not those baggy pants!

Tony: Firm but Fair

Pete: Slack and Sleazy

Doug: A T-shirt with 23 on it and the trousers he woke up in.

What are each of your vices.

Marcus: Doug's vice is seeking attention at any cost and not knowing when to stop drinking, Pete loves the ladies + himself!, Tony's vice: plants and craft tools.

Marcus: Miami Vice and other 80's related things.

Pete: I just have unconditional love for the whole universe is that a vice?

Doug: Uh - no, I guess they're all perfect, really.

Thanks guys!
