Andrea interviews Jeans goes POP! on 30 October 2007

Listen to Jeans goes POP and you'll be surprised to know that there is only one person in this band.

Let your mind turn over a few images of "one man band" and if you are anything like me, your imagination will stick at the picture of an old man making a living as a busker next to the Christmas markets, his back hunched under the weight of a huge bass drum and his gloveless fingers red and chapped, strumming an aged and over-used guitar in the bitter winter wind, hoping that shoppers will throw money into his tin cup so he can buy presents for his grandchildren.

You can scrap that image because Paul Jeans is redefining the concept of a one man band.

I decided to do this because I wanted to play the piano and guitar and a lot of different instruments.  I've been Jeans goes POP! for just over a year now and my album, In Glorious Technicolour, is out on Monday 5 November.

There is only one of me in the band and that makes people get confused as to what it is all about. I do all right though because people show a lot of interest. I've recently played a few gigs in Newcastle, which is my home town, and supported Kate Nash.

How long did it take to produce the album?

It didn't take so long, actually. All the songs were done and written and I just needed to add some extra stuff. My record company is called League Against Rubbish Records.  I know people there and they asked if they could produce the album.

Where do you see Jeans goes POP! going?

I like good tours, playing live music. I like to play my own tunes around the country and I don't have any illusions about being a star. Although if people want to throw money at me, I wouldn't say no to a superstar lifestyle!

You've been likened to Mika, how do you feel about that?

(laughs) I wouldn't say that. One track song sounds Mikarish, I don't think the rest does at all.

What are your songs about?

I don't have any specific ideas to write songs about, they are about how I feel. They are quite depressing really because I have a lot of insecurities. But I am not an emo (laughs).

What type of music do you really dislike?

I really hate music that is written to be romantic for the sake of it.  Like James Blunt, his is overly romantic and smarmy. I don't like X-factor, those are musicians who bang out stuff without thinking about what they are doing; and falseness.

On your album, In Glorious Technicolour, you have made a track with your cousin, Beth Jeans Houghton. Are you from a musical family?

No not really.  I've only recently met my cousin - she is like a long lost cousin.

You look like the young Elvis Presley

Ah, do you think so? My hair has grown a bit since that photo so maybe I don't look like him anymore.

Have you any suggestions how to become successful in the music industry?

You have to believe in what you do and believe in yourself. Don't do things you think you should do. Something can work for one person, but not everyone. You have to be happy doing things for yourself, there is no point getting paid for something you hate doing.

You recently toured with Kate Nash, what is she like?

She is alright, she didn't talk much. She asked me where the toilets were and then just kept herself to herself.
